A new project to assist Serbians on the way to the European Union and Schengen area accession

The kick-off meeting held on 6 February in Belgrade, Serbia, marked the launch of the European Union Twinning Project No. SR 14 IPA JH 02 18 ,,Development of the Schengen Action Plan". Lithuanian Police is participating at this project together with the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, the State Border Guard Service, and the Hungarian National Police Headquarters.

The partners' aim is to assist the Serbian institutions, particularly the Ministry of the Interior, in meeting the European Union accession requirements under the Chapter 24 - Justice, freedom and security – as well as to develop the Schengen Action Plan for the country. This will be done by assisting the country institutions in meeting the legal, technical and administrative requirements of the Schengen acquis. During the project, the Lithuanian and Hungarian experts will share their experience in preparing for the European Union accession as well as the best practice of the border management and control.

During the kick-off meeting of the project, Ms D. Hrkalović, State Secretary of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia, stressed the exceptional importance the project has for the Serbian Ministry of the Interior and other institutions as it will help them to meet the requirements for accessing the Schengen area.

Project Leader Mr R. Liubajevas, Chief Adviser of the Ministry of Interior of Republic of Lithuania, emphasized the valuable experience in the area of the European integration Lithuania and Hungary have and are ready to share with the Serbian authorities. As Mr. R. Liubajevas pointed out in his speech, the Project will provide a solid basis for the further development of the Lithuanian institutions' partnership with their Serbian counterparts.
